Discussion “Why Insurance Matters”, Organized by Insurance Europe, Brought Together Europe’s Political and Business Leaders

The discussion meeting organized by Insurance Europe on 26 September 2024 in Brussels, brought together senior representatives of the insurance sector and policymakers from across Europe. ABZ was represented by its Secretary General, Nina Kolchakova.

Panelists in the discussion included Frédéric de Courtois, President of Insurance Europe, Michaela Koller, Director General of Insurance Europe, MEP Stéphanie Yon-Courtin, Tilman Lüder of the European Commission, and Fausto Parente, Executive Director of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA).

The debate addressed a number of crucial issues for the sector and for Europe—from creating sound regulation and supporting long-term investment to tackling climate change and closing protection gaps.

The key message conveyed by the European insurance industry was that insurers are well positioned to support Europe’s economic and social policy agenda and to help address many of today’s major challenges. The sector provides an additional layer of protection for European citizens and businesses, helps people save for retirement—thus assisting governments in financing solidarity-based pension schemes—contributes to addressing climate challenges, and invests in ways that support economic growth and resilience.

The recommendations and proposals of the insurance industry are presented in Insurance Europe’s publication #InsuranceMatters.
