ABZ Participates in the 22nd Edition of the Student Educational Program “The Non-Banking Financial Sector in Bulgaria” Organized by the Financial Supervision Commission

The educational initiative is organized annually by the Financial Supervision Commission (FSC), in partnership with the Atanas Burov Foundation and the Ministry of Education and Science (MES). The 22nd edition of the program “The Non-Banking Financial Sector in Bulgaria” was held from 9 to 13 September 2024 and involved students from 12 specialized high schools across the country.

The Association of Bulgarian Insurers (ABZ) is a long-standing supporter of this proven and impactful educational initiative. This year, ABZ hosted the insurance module of the program, which took place on 10 September.

Nina Kolchakova, Secretary General of ABZ, met with the students and introduced them to the essence of insurance, tracing its historical origins and development over the centuries. She explained the functions of the insurance market, the types of insurance, the main insurance products, and the current market dynamics. The students showed particular interest in the real-life insurance case studies, actively engaging in the discussions and demonstrating strong curiosity and critical thinking.

As part of their practical training, the students visited DZI the following day, where they had the opportunity to learn more about the operations of one of Bulgaria’s leading insurance companies.

The educational program “The Non-Banking Financial Sector in Bulgaria” offered participants a comprehensive overview of the most important topics in the non-banking financial sector, including:

  • The three-pillar model of the pension system and the development of the pension insurance market in Bulgaria
  • The types of insurance and the role of insurers in society
  • Financial instruments traded on the capital markets
  • Trading mechanisms on the Bulgarian Stock Exchange (BSE)
  • The EU Green Deal and its implications for financial markets
  • The upcoming European regulations on Digital Operational Resilience (DORA) and Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA)
  • The OECD Principles of Corporate Governance
  • Consumer protection in the financial sector

By combining theoretical learning with practical experiences, the program once again provided participating students with valuable knowledge and insights into the functioning and importance of the non-banking financial sector.
