In recent years, there has been growing interest in pet insurance, said Monika Hristova from Colonnade Insurance in an interview for Bulgarian National Radio - Sofia, realized with the support of ABZ. As a result, a number of insurance companies now offer policies specifically designed for companion animals.
Pet insurance in Bulgaria primarily covers dogs and cats and typically includes medical expenses due to illness or accident – such as examinations, diagnostics, and medications – but not preventive care. To qualify, pets must meet legal requirements: they must be microchipped, vaccinated, have a valid passport, and be aged between 4 months and 9 years. Some policies also include third-party liability coverage in case the pet causes damage or injury. The insurance is affordable and can protect owners from the often high costs of veterinary care. According to Hristova, attitudes toward pets have evolved significantly over the past decade, with more people showing responsibility, empathy, and care for their animals – and pet insurance reflects that shift.
