In the context of the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East and growing concerns about tourist safety, the topic of travel insurance coverage was discussed on Bulgaria ON AIR by representatives of the tourism sector, diplomacy and the insurance industry.
Representing the Association of Bulgarian Insurers (ABZ), Evdokia Kodzhabasheva of Colonnade Insurance took part in the discussion, explaining what is covered under standard “Travel Assistance Abroad” and “Trip Cancellation” insurance policies in such situations.
“War” risk is excluded from standard insurance policies
Kodzhabasheva emphasised that the “war” risk is generally excluded from standard insurance policies, including “Travel Assistance Abroad” and “Trip Cancellation” insurance. At the same time, such coverage may be arranged in specific cases, mainly for corporate clients, and is typically offered by international insurers.
Coverage remains valid for medical expenses
Despite the exclusion of this risk, insured persons retain their rights with respect to covered risks. “The core coverage under ‘Travel Assistance Abroad’ insurance is medical expenses, and insured individuals continue to be entitled to coverage for such costs,” Kodzhabasheva explained.
She noted that, in the current situation, insurers have taken additional measures to support their clients. “Insurers have extended, free of charge, the validity of policies for clients located in blocked areas and are providing assistance services—support and organisation in case of need for medical care, including hospitalisation,” she said.
Regarding “Trip Cancellation” insurance, she clarified that it covers cancellation or interruption of travel due to specifically listed reasons, most often related to health conditions. “Military actions are not a covered risk under this type of insurance either, which means compensation cannot be claimed for a cancelled flight due to a conflict,” Kodzhabasheva pointed out. In such cases, passengers should seek their rights from the airline.
It is important for clients to understand their coverage
Kodzhabasheva stressed that it is essential for consumers to carefully review the scope of coverage and exclusions before purchasing an insurance policy. Each policy clearly outlines what is covered, while the applicable general terms and conditions specify excluded risks and other provisions.
