On October 11–12, the National Scientific and Practical Conference titled “Market and Non-Market Systemic Challenges in Insurance and Social Security – Theory, Practice, Problems and Solutions” took place at the D. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rumen Yerusalimov, Dean of the Faculty of Finance at the Academy and a member of the ABZ Management Board, opened the event by stating: “We are pleased that the tradition of holding scientific and practical forums is alive, as they serve as a natural hub for the exchange of ideas, the discussion of pressing issues, and the shaping of a vision for the future of insurance and social security.”

Nina Kolchakova, Secretary General of ABZ, welcomed the organizers and participants on behalf of the association’s leadership, emphasizing that the forum is yet another example of the value created by the D. A. Tsenov Academy in both academic thought and the practical dimensions of insurance and social security. She reaffirmed that ABZ is a stable and natural partner of the institution, and that their cooperation will continue to grow and be enriched with new meaningful initiatives.

Plenary Presentation: “The Economic Footprint of Insurance in Bulgaria: Challenges and Opportunities for Development”

Veselin Angelov, member of the ABZ Management Board, delivered the plenary address titled “The Economic Footprint of Insurance in Bulgaria: Challenges and Opportunities for Development.” He stated that the insurance sector must adapt to new realities, including climate change and rapid digitalization, which require innovation and forward-thinking solutions. Investing in new technologies and risk management methods is essential for improving efficiency and reducing costs. A key factor for increasing insurance penetration is improving insurance literacy among the population. Another crucial focus for the sector’s future development is sustainability. By integrating environmental and social principles into their business models, insurers can better meet the rising expectations of both consumers and regulators. According to Angelov, the success of the insurance sector in Bulgaria will depend on its ability to adapt, innovate, and actively participate in education and sustainable development.

Scientific Contributions by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rumen Yerusalimov

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rumen Yerusalimov also presented his research during the conference. One of his studies analyzed the development of Motor Hull (Casco) insurance following its decline from the leading position in the Bulgarian insurance market. His second research paper focused on the potential of combined insurance products as a means to increase insurance coverage.

With its rich program, in-depth presentations, and lively discussions, the National Scientific and Practical Conference on “Market and Non-Market Systemic Challenges in Insurance and Social Security” at D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics – Svishtov clearly demonstrated the need for and value of such forums for both academia and the insurance industry.
