Vesselin Angelov, Member of the ABZ Board, on bTV: Report the damage to your insurer as soon as possible

When damage happens, it is important to file a claim as soon as possible, without waiting to gather all the necessary documents. These can be submitted later, as the insurer will provide specific instructions on the required actions and documents.

This was the advice given by Vesselina Angelov, a member of the Management Board of the Association of Bulgarian Insurers (ABZ), in a bTV report regarding the damage caused by the severe storm that passed through Sofia on August 24.

The first claims have already been filed, with the majority being for vehicle damage, mainly due to flooding rather than hail. There are also reports of damaged property, and more claims are expected in the coming days.

Insurance companies are prepared for the increased number of claims and have provided additional resources to ensure that they can be processed in a timely manner. Many insurers are also extending the usual deadlines for filing a claim, which are typically between 3 and 7 days.

“It is important to file the claim, and then all the necessary documents can be prepared,” emphasized Vesselina Angelov.

Filing a claim is easy and does not inconvenience customers. A report can be submitted by phone, in person at an office, and many companies also offer the option of filing a claim online. The insurer then guides the client on what documents are required and what the next steps are.

The specific documents depend on the type of insurance and the damage, and may include those proving ownership of the affected vehicle or property. In the case of large-scale natural disasters, customers usually do not need to prove the occurrence of the event with certificates from meteorological services – insurers have the necessary information about it.

It is important to document the damage with photos before starting to clear up or repair. If urgent action is required to limit the damage – for example, in the case of a broken window, damaged roof, or water ingress – it should not be delayed until an inspection is carried out. It is a good idea to keep photos of the initial condition and documents for any expenses incurred.

After submitting all the necessary documents, the standard deadline for paying compensation is up to 15 working days, Vesselina Angelov reminded.
