“Don't wait for disaster to strike. Insure your home today.” Under this motto, the Association of Bulgarian Insurers (ABZ) has launched a new public information campaign encouraging homeowners to protect their homes and make informed choices when purchasing property insurance.
Floods, storms, hailstorms and fires are increasingly causing significant damage to the homes of thousands of Bulgarian families. Floods alone affect around 80,000 people in Bulgaria every year. Yet less than 3% of the economic losses caused by climate-related risks in Bulgaria are covered by insurance. This means that the vast majority of the financial consequences continue to be borne by affected households, businesses and the state.
Interest in property insurance tends to increase after every natural disaster. However, the more prudent approach is to protect one's home before disaster strikes. To ensure that policyholders receive the protection they need, it is important to choose insurance that reflects both the characteristics of the property and the owner's specific protection needs. Before purchasing a policy, homeowners should therefore familiarise themselves with the available options, policy terms and coverage, and seek professional insurance advice where appropriate.
A nationally representative survey on public attitudes towards insurance conducted in 2026 shows that an increasing number of Bulgarians recognise the importance of property insurance. The share of respondents who currently have or have previously had home insurance has doubled—from 16% in 2020 to 31% in 2026. At the same time, the proportion of people who believe that protecting property is primarily the owner's responsibility has increased to 65%, while fewer people expect the state to assume that responsibility. However, limited consumer awareness remains one of the main challenges. Nearly two-thirds of respondents believe that people do not understand insurance well enough, while more than half consider insurance policy terms and conditions difficult to understand. This is precisely why the new campaign places particular emphasis on helping consumers make informed decisions when choosing property insurance.
“People are increasingly recognising the importance of insuring their homes. The next important step is choosing the right insurance policy. This means understanding what the policy covers, knowing the available options and seeking professional advice when needed. Improving consumer awareness is one of ABZ's top priorities, because making the right choice leads to better insurance protection,” said Nikolay Stanchev, Chair of the Management Board of ABZ.
At the heart of the campaign is the educational prize game “Your Insurance IQ: Home”, which will run from 15 to 25 July. Through a short online quiz, participants will be able to test their knowledge of property insurance, learn useful information on the subject and, if they achieve a high score, enter a prize draw for one of three EUR 100 consumer electronics vouchers. Each quiz question is accompanied by a brief explanation, making the quiz both an educational tool and a knowledge test. The campaign will also feature a series of practical tips published on ABZ's social media channels to help consumers make more informed decisions when choosing home insurance.
