On October 1, we celebrate Insurance Professional Day

On October 1, the insurance sector celebrates its professional holiday. Today is the day when we turn our attention to the people who, through their work, make the world around us safer, more predictable, and more calming.

Bulgarian insurance has a long history – as early as the 19th century, after the development of modern insurance in developed countries such as the United Kingdom, the first representatives of insurance companies arrived on Bulgarian lands. In 1891, the first Bulgarian insurance company – “Bulgaria” – was established in the city of Rousse. It began operations on October 1, and this date was adopted as the birthday of Bulgarian insurance. Part of the archives and history of the first Bulgarian insurer are preserved today in the State Archives – Rousse.

Initially, property policies were offered, and later agricultural insurance became widely represented. In the following years, more Bulgarian insurance companies appeared, and automobile insurance, cargo, and goods insurance developed, which made possible the flourishing of Bulgarian exports and the development of industry. After 1946, the insurance sector was nationalized, and only the “State Insurance Institute” (DZI) remained on the market. As early as 1989, the first private insurance company in modern Bulgarian history was established. After the 1990s, a new stage in the development of the sector began, thanks to foreign investments and strict requirements for registration and licensing.

Today, 36 companies operate in Bulgaria in the fields of general insurance, life insurance, reinsurance, as well as numerous insurance brokers and intermediaries, and European companies that offer services under the freedom of establishment in the EU. The sector recorded a 12% annual growth in collected premiums in 2025 and a 25% growth in paid claims.

ABZ congratulates all insurers on October 1!
