On March 21, 2025, a round table on “Professional liability insurance for medical specialists and healthcare institutions” was held at VUZF University, organized in partnership with the Association of Bulgarian Insurers (ABI) and the medical law firm “Sharkova & Partners.” The event was opened by Prof. Dr. Boris Velchev, Rector of VUZF, and Nikolay Stanchev, Chairman of ABI. The forum attracted strong interest from representatives of insurance companies, ABI, academia, and practicing lawyers.
In her presentation, lawyer Sharkova outlined the main issues in the regulatory framework and practical application of professional liability insurance for medical staff and hospitals. She highlighted the dynamics of lawsuits and compensation awards over the years, showing a clear trend towards more frequent rulings and increasing compensation amounts.
Participants in the discussion addressed various aspects of the current situation and the multiple reasons behind the lack of adequate insurance protection for medical specialists and healthcare institutions, with the insufficiently well-defined regulatory framework being a major factor. All agreed that the discussion must continue with the active involvement of hospitals in order to identify workable solutions to address this protection gap.
